Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve

Foulshaw Moss is an unusual habitat called a lowland raised mire – or a peat bog to you and me. This makes it a very special place to visit.

There are several flat boardwalks that take you across the bog: one to a viewing tower where you can take in the glorious view over to Morecambe Bay; another to the osprey viewing area (March-September), where we often have volunteers to help you spot our nesting ospreys.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust has spent years restoring this special place.

Free to visit. Dogs on leads are welcome.

Holker Hall and Gardens

The original House was built in the early 17th Century. After it was almost destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1871, William Cavendish and his daughter, Louisa, recruited the most eminent architects and designers of their time, to rebuild Holker in the very latest style. Neo-Elizabethan in its architecture, with the imposing tower and soaring cupola, Holker was constructed from the finest materials, many from the Estate itself, by church Architects Paley & Austin of Lancaster.

Over the years, Great British Gardeners, such as Joseph Paxton, Thomas Mawson and recently contemporary Landscape Architect Kim Wilkie, have collaborated with the resident families to reflect not just fashions of the day, but personal and sometimes eccentric tastes.

Furness Abbey

Furness Abbey

The stately ruins of Furness Abbey are cradled in a lovely, wooded valley. Thanks to a major conservation programme, and a reconstructed stairway, there’s plenty to explore here.

Founded by Stephen, later King of England, Furness became England’s second richest Cistercian abbey. Its red sandstone ruins include the tower and recently conserved east end of the great church; the chapter house; and almost the entire cloister east range.

Other attractions

In addition to all of the above, Grange itself has beautiful parks and gardens. Nearby Cartmel Priory is steeped in culture and rich with history. Plus the Lake District, the UK’s largest National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is on our doorstep.

Visit Windermere, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere for magical days out.
