The piping call of the charismatic Oystercatcher reminds us that here is a sanctuary for exhausted migrant birds escaping an arctic winter. In summer the pavements and railings are festooned with displays of fine art, local photography and handicrafts.

Yesterday’s cross-bay travellers and monks returning to Cartmel’s medieval priory give way today to a new kind of pilgrim. Tinkling bells and the whirring chatter of bicycle gears announce the arrival, on that most civilised form of sustainable transport,of W2W cyclists completing the first stage of the Walney Island to Sunderland 151 mile cycle route. They will rest overnight here,and tomorrow,refreshed, they will climb the Pennines by Kirkby Stephen and Tan Hill.

Walkers, picking their way through the cowslips and purple orchid traverse the wooded slopes of the 727 ft. Hampsfell. In a deafening chorus of birdsong , they rise above the town to be further rewarded by a summit panorama of mountains, from the ‘rosy-fingered’ eastern dawn to a golden sunset behind the western fells.
